INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS JAY OF ARMY OF FRESHMEN
1. Hit The Deck is one of the first festivals of the year. Are you excited for the festival season? How do you prepare?
Not to get too jock about it but I’ve been getting in shape! Hitting the gym and what not. I’m not 21 anymore so I can’t rock out all day, party all night and get no sleep. This is our first tour and first fest of the year and that usually means an extra level of excitement and partying, so I’ll be ready physically. As for my liver being ready, that’s another story! Army of Freshmen tends to go a little overboard at festivals with the partying.
2. There’s a lot of bands playing across the day so why should people come and see you?
Because every once and while it’s good to see a band whose circulation isn’t cut off from their jeans. In all seriousness though, we put on a FUN show. We’re not pretending to be pissed off. We’re happy to be there and we want the audience to have a good time. Plus we’re giving away money during our set… no seriously… we are.
3. Hit The Deck is an all day event with an after party that will go long into the night. What are your tips for surviving the whole event?
Sleep the night before- not easy to do. Lots of water- easy to do. Pace the drinking- not easy to do. Make sure you get a meal in- easy to do. Use sweet dance moves to pick up a member of the opposite sex at the after party- impossible to do!
4. Are there any other bands you are hoping to catch on the day?
For sure! Cool for us cause there’s a lot of UK bands we can’t see regularly being from the states. If I’m to believe the internet, Don Broco is the second coming of the Beatles, so definitely want to see what they’re all about! I know it’s Summerlin’s last show, would like to see that. Have to see some of the acts on the acoustic stage. Vinnie, Jonah and Walter are all legends. Always thought Sonic Boom Six should be a lot bigger. I like wandering at festivals and finding a band I’ve never heard of that I like. That’s what Fests are about. I think people who plant themselves at the front of the main stage for 8 hours are missing the point.
5. What plans do you have for the summer?
Going to shoot our next video then lots of outdoors events and fests in the States and then back to the UK in the fall.
6. What was the first festival you attended?
Check this out! I was at the single biggest date of Lollapalooza EVER! Happened in Philadelphia. Felt like Woodstock. The first act was Buddhist Monks who the Beastie Boys brought out. The sky was turning gray. Shoes were flying in the air. Seemed to my 14 self it was the end of the world. Later that day I almost was crushed to death in theis sea of people during the Breeders set. It was also one of the first times Courtney Love appeared after Kurt died. She was hammered. Thanks for asking because that was a flashback!
7. If you could program a main stage (7 bands) past or present, who would you pick?
Just personal but I would mix it up with my all time favorites. They Might Be Giants, Tom Waits, The Beatles, Randy Newman, Phil Cody, Arlo Guthrie and of course Army of Freshmen- I’d be an idiot not get on a sweet festival that I ran and hang with my musical heroes!
8. What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen at a festival?
Marilyn Manson making an entire backstage stand behind ropes so he could walk uninterrupted to the stage. Keep in mind this was at Download and the backstage was full of actual rock stars as big as him that had to wait so he could walk by. So there his is parting the sea, only to go sit in a golf cart that wouldn’t start. Instant justice for douche bag behavior… The Anti Christ superstar in a dead golf cart.
Hit The Deck takes places in Bristol on April 20th and Nottingham on April 21st.
